Isaac & Rebekah: Love at First Sight
In this session, we begin when Isaac’s father, Abraham, sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant travels with a caravan of camels, loaded down with gifts and supplies. When he arrives in Mesopotamia, he stops at a well and prays that God would lead him to just the right match for Isaac.
It is a very specific prayer request: he will ask a young woman for a drink of water, and if she is the one God has chosen, she will offer to water the camels, too. He wants to know for sure this is the right one. That is incredibly important, because Isaac will inherit the blessing of his father, and the covenant promise that God is going to make his family into a great nation.
The servant gets a direct answer to prayer. He meets this young woman, Rebekah, and he knows immediately that she is the one: she is virtuous, she is beautiful, she is kind to animals, and she is from a good family. That is the setup for one of the most romantic stories in the Bible.
